English Springer Spaniels - Care
English Springer Spaniels have beautiful long coats that need some grooming. The field-type Springer will do well with regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush. Bathe your Springer only when necessary. Check the ears regularly to prevent infection. If not brushed often, Springers with longer coats will mat. The hair should be shaved on the under side of the ears. The hair on the feet needs to be trimmed in order to prevent burrs and foxtails. The bench-type Springer Spaniels needs more attention to its coat. This breed is a constant average shedder.
English Springer Spaniels - Breed History
Throughout the 19th and early 20th century in Britain, smaller dogs in the same litter would be used to hunt woodcock; they were called "cockers." Larger littermates, used to flush (or "spring") game, were called "Springers." The Sporting Spaniel Society of Britain decided upon the name "Springer" in 1902. This breed hunts well both on land and water and is good at work in brush. This particular breed of spaniel is the basis of all the English hunting spaniels. During the Renaissance, it was considered an ideal companion for the European hunter. Popularity of English Springer Spaniels in America began in 1700.
